What does a relationship with God involve?

Jesus prayed, “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that You have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)

God is not lonely. Within the perfect, loving fellowship of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, He is completely happy. He does not need human beings in order to have a relationship. Yet He desires to include us in that eternal fellowship of love. That is why Jesus Christ came to earth and gave His life. He wants us to share in His glory. This will only be fully realized in the new world, but through faith in Jesus we can already experience something of it now.

When our relationship with God is restored, it fills the deepest emptiness in our hearts. We still have a need for human contact—that is a very natural desire—but our happiness and identity no longer depend on it as strongly. When we live in a living connection with God, we are no longer existentially lonely. Something deep within us is healed.

Jesus said to His disciples, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). He said this on the day He returned to heaven. So He is not physically with us. Yet do you experience His presence in your life? In what ways do you notice it? And if He does not yet have a place in your life: do you miss Him?
