“All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and His brothers.” (Acts 1:14)
Can you imagine Jesus’ disciples gazing upward in wonder and confusion after Jesus was taken up into heaven right before their eyes? (Acts 1:9) Had they lost Jesus again?
How wonderful it is to read that Jesus sent two heavenly messengers to help them on their way. These messengers spoke to disciples and gave them an encouraging promise: “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)
This motivated the eleven disciples to act, and as Jesus had instructed them, they returned to Jerusalem. There they continued to seek fellowship with one another as they joined in prayer to God (Acts 1:13).
Jesus’ followers did not yet know how He would fulfill His promise about the Holy Spirit. As believers, we often wonder how Jesus will continue to lead us, or in what way He will work things out in our lives. A life of faith can include waiting. And during the waiting, prayer can sustain us. Praying together for the fulfillment of God’s promises helps us to remain patient and to persevere.
