“He [Jesus] upholds the universe by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3)
Some people think about the earth as an enormous living organism, of which we humans are part. Others see the earth as an ecosystem, and us humans as one part of a large and interdependent biological community. This ecosystem could collapse under the pressure of overpopulation and over-exploitation, or change in such a way that it becomes inhabitable for humans. But as long as the balance is maintained, the earth will exist on its own.
This sounds reasonable, but it’s not all there is to say. The Bible tells us that the earth and every living creature, along with all spiritual beings, were made by the power of God’s Word. He spoke and they came into existence. In a similar way, the whole creation is kept together by the word of His power. Jesus preserves the world from falling apart and running into confusion. He holds the physical and spiritual world in His hands, and actively keeps them ticking. He upholds and guides all history, and also our personal lives, permitting some things to happen and restraining other things. He is the centripetal force of the universe.
Do you believe this is true? Does this fact help you to trust in Jesus’ goodness and power?
