The Holy Spirit assures us of our salvation

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16)

Another work of the Spirit in our lives is that He assures us that we are children of God. Some Christians really struggle with this question: can I be absolutely, 100% sure that God has saved me? Could it be that I’m mistaken and have deceived myself — maybe because I just want to be saved? Is there any evidence that I’ll go to heaven after I die?

It’s important to realize that we are saved by faith; and faith means believing something we can’t see, and trusting Somebody we can’t see with our natural eyes. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).

But the Holy Spirit can help us here. He bears witness that we are children of God. He can set our doubting hearts at rest. Similarly, Paul states that God has “given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:22, 5:5, Ephesians 1:13).

Do you trust God’s promise that “to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12)?
