Taking up the armor of God

Last updated on November 29, 2023

Why do people love darkness more than light?

“We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand” (Ephesians 6:12-13)

Believers are not at war with “flesh and blood”, but with spiritual enemies. Therefore, they do not need guns or nuclear weapons, but the armor of God which consists of the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of readiness given by the Gospel, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. All these things are needed to withstand the schemes of the devil and his servants.

The belt of truth guards us against Satan’s lies. The breastplate of righteousness reminds us that Jesus has paid for our sins and given us his righteousness. We need faith in God’s promises and we should never doubt our salvation that will be complete in life after death.

Satan can never take our salvation from us. If he tries to make us doubt or to make us believe lies, we should take up the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s Word — just as Jesus did when Satan tried to tempt Him into sin.

It is frightening to read about so many spiritual opponents. But the Bible encourages us to take up the whole armor of God so that we “may be able to withstand”. We are not unprotected.

Are you wearing God’s armor every day?
