“He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself.” (Proverbs 6:32)
The Bible is quite clear about sexual morality. God has designed marriage as a life-long covenant relationship between one man and one woman. Only within this context, sexuality is to be enjoyed as a gift from God. All other sexual relationships are forbidden. Today’s text stresses that adultery is destructive. And that point of view is repeated multiple times in the book of Proverbs, for example in Proverbs 5:3-5.
“For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol”.
Several Bible stories show that this is true. Whenever a husband or a wife is unfaithful, this causes major damage to their marriage and family life. Whenever a husband has multiple wives (Jacob for example had four), the family is full of strife and hatred.
Based on God’s laws and human experience, the book of Proverbs urges us: “rejoice in the wife of your youth … be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman?” (Proverbs 5:18-20).
