“You shall not murder.” (Exodus 20:13)
The sixth commandment touches on our lives as well as those lives around us. God doesn’t want us to hurt others in any way: physically, spiritually or emotionally.
The commandment does not forbid righteous killing as in a war, or out of self-defence. What is prohibited is any violence, hatred or revenge. Uncontrolled rage resulting from insult or hurtful behaviour comes under this prohibition. In Matthew 5:21-26, Jesus judges every violation of the sixth commandment, however minor it seems, as sin. First, He mentions unrighteous anger—it is serious enough that we ought to be found guilty of this offence in court. Next, He addresses those who condemn others as fools. No justice system can suffice to judge this sin; only the judgement of God which refers to the perpetrator as “liable to the hell of fire” for this sin (Matthew 5:22).
Jesus’ words can be confronting, but if that is so, take refuge in Him. You will be like Jesus only if He has renewed you by His Word and His Spirit. Then you will be empowered to obey the commandment: “you shall not kill”. If you do disobey this commandment, there is forgiveness and reconciliation as well as a new beginning if you are remorseful and turn back to God.
