When you are in debt, you want to get out of it as quickly as possible. It’s unpleasant to owe someone something and to be constantly confronted with it.
It can also happen that you are morally guilty. For example, you may have gossiped about someone, thereby betraying their trust or damaging their reputation. Such a moral debt becomes a disturbance in your relationship with that other person.
The Bible tells us that we are also indebted to God. He is our Creator, and therefore we are to obey Him. But there is no human who truly succeeds in doing that:
“All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 14:3 NIV)
When you begin to realize how guilty you are before God, you naturally want to make it right immediately. But we cannot! In fact, we keep making mistakes again and again, thereby increasing our debt even more.
To solve this problem, we need Jesus:
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” (Ephesians 1:7 NIV)
