He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ (Matthew 17:5)
Jesus had withdrawn to a mountain with three disciples who experienced something of Jesus’ heavenly glory. Imagine the impression that left on them. We don’t read how it is possible that the two who stood by Jesus were recognized as Moses and Elijah, two important figures in Israel’s history. In Luke 9:31 you can read about how they spoke with Jesus about his imminent suffering and death in Jerusalem. Peter wanted to make this celestial experience last longer (Matthew 17:4), but that wasn’t Jesus’ intention; He had to descend the mountain to continue on His way to Jerusalem, and His disciples had to follow Him.
In confirmation, the voice of God sounded from a cloud: ‘This is my beloved Son…hear Him’. From childhood Peter and the other disciples had heard the law of Moses and were familiar with the words of Elijah and the other prophets; now they needed to listen to God’s own Son, Jesus. As they observed Jesus, they would discover how He would fulfil God’s will. Jesus would receive heavenly glory again, but then through suffering and death.
