And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. (Matthew 26:75)
Jesus was arrested and questioned in the high priest’s palace. Peter found his way in and warmed himself by a fire (Matthew 26:57-58).
He had been sincere when he assured Jesus that he would not deny Him (Matthew 26:35). Before Jesus was arrested, Peter drew his sword to defend Him. (John 18:10). But when a servant girl started to ask about his connection to Jesus, Peter did precisely what he said he never would. With increasing vehemence, Peter denied all knowledge of Jesus. Denying someone means that you have no connection; you distance yourself and deny that that person has ever been part of your life.
Was it because Jesus had been arrested and Peter had not expected that to happen? Or was it the antagonistic atmosphere? Jesus was delivered to the spiritual leaders and to the soldiers without a fight.
Once he realized what he had done, Peter went out and cried bitterly. Gone were the proud avowals of loyalty.
Peter was on a journey of self-discovery. Jesus knew him better than he knew himself. Jesus also understands our heart and motivation better than we often do ourselves.
