“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.” (Psalm 103:13-14)
God created us Himself. That is why He knows our natural limitations better than anyone else. Moreover, He told the first humans after they disobeyed Him: “You you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19) We often fancy ourselves to be quite something, but our lives are short and fragile. We are mortal and will return to dust. Psalm 103 compares us to a flower in the field that is easily blown over, or to grass that is cut down and withers.
God knows what humans are like. He is not impressed by our boasting or conceit, “for He knows our frame.” (Psalm 103:14) What does He do with that observation? Does He take advantage of our vulnerability? On the contrary! He showers us with beauty and happiness (verse 5). He remains patient, loving, and merciful (verse 8). He forgives our sins (verse 12). He cares for us as He cares for young children who depend on their parents’ care. (verse 13) What love He demonstrates!
