“Our old self was crucified with him.” (Romans 6:6)
Our old life died. We are no longer slaves of sin, but children of God.
Jesus did not only die for us, but we also died with Him. When Jesus was crucified, our old nature was crucified with Him. His death became the death of our old nature. His resurrection became our resurrection to a new life.
A new life is not just a possibility offered to us by God. No, it is a reality that is given through Him. The cross of Christ doesn’t only free us from the guilt of sin, but it also set us free from the power of sin. That does not mean that we have nothing to do with it anymore. A moment later we are called to not let sin reign in our mortal body.
The battle against sin remains. The last skirmishes can still be hectic and violent. But our enemy, sin, has already been overcome. We have this guarantee because we now belong to God’s army.
Are you still in slavery? Or did Jesus set you free?
