Moses kept his eyes on the invisible God

“By faith [Moses] left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible.” (Hebrews 11:27 NIV)

Moses was an Israelite who grew up in the royal court of Egypt. (You can read more about this in Exodus 2.) One day, he saw a bush that was on fire but was not consumed. As he drew near, God spoke to him from the bush. I’m sure Moses never forgot that extraordinary encounter.

God called Moses to lead the people of Israel out of slavery and bring them to a new homeland. He also told him that Pharaoh would fiercely oppose him and that the Israelites would not immediately accept him as their leader. Moses was overwhelmed by this calling and tried to avoid it. Yet he had to go. And God gave him this promise: “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12 NIV)

Moses held on to that promise. He went to Pharaoh, announced God’s judgments, gathered the people, and eventually led them out of Egypt. He did all this “not fearing the king’s anger” (Hebrews 11:27 NIV).

In his own strength, Moses could never have accomplished this. But he kept his eyes fixed on the Invisible One who went with him. That faith gave him the courage to persevere.

Do you believe that God is with you, even though you cannot see Him? What is the basis for your confidence?
