“We are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
Jesus Christ has conquered the powers of evil and reigns from heaven. He promises that believers who remain faithful to the end will sit with Him on His throne (see Revelation 3:21). That is a beautiful future hope. But just as Jesus’ reign is not yet fully visible on earth, so His followers do not yet live as kings.
Christians are attacked by the spiritual forces of evil, which can manifest themselves in all kinds of practical setbacks, but also on a psychological level. They often face opposition from other people who are hostile toward Jesus. They fight against their own sinful nature and against the many temptations that come their way. It is enough to make one lose heart!
And yet Paul says that they are “more than conquerors” — right in the midst of all the trials he lists in Romans 8:35–39. The secret lies in the words “through Him Who loved us.” The apostle John says something similar: “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Whoever is united with Christ by faith shares in His victory over sin, death, and the powers of evil.
