“Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’” (Matthew 9:13 NIV)
Those who witnessed Jesus spending time with people of questionable reputation were quick to judge Him. But Jesus sent them away with the assignment to reflect carefully on God’s words that mercy is more important than the strict observance of religious rules.
Certainly, God has given commandments that people are to obey. That, too, must be part of following Jesus. But the heart of the gospel does not lie in regulations; it lies in mercy. God’s children are called to live from that mercy and to share it with others.
Jesus Christ was moved with compassion for people who were spiritually lost and trying to find their way through life without God (see Matthew 9:36). He is the very embodiment of God’s compassionate heart.
When we live close to Christ, we begin to realize how much patience and love we receive from Him. That realization should not leave us unmoved. In turn, we must learn to have a compassionate heart for the people whom God brings on our path.
How do you experience God’s mercy? And do you also receive mercy from the people around you? What is your attitude toward those around you?
