“I am like a desert owl,
like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake; I have become
like a bird alone on a roof.”
(Psalm 102:6-7 NIV)
Psalm 102 is a heartfelt cry from the depths of suffering. The psalmist is burning with fever. He has lost his appetite and has become little more than skin and bones. The nights are long and lonely. He compares himself to an owl among the ruins or a solitary bird on a rooftop.
This psalm confronts us with the reality of suffering. Perhaps you recognize something of this struggle in your own life. Or perhaps life is going well for you. If so, this psalm invites you to pause and remember those who are weighed down by grief, illness, or loneliness. Their world may have become very small because of their limitations. In such moments, a visit, a listening ear, or a simple expression of care can make a profound difference.
Yet Psalm 102 is more than a lament. The psalmist deliberately turns his attention—and ours—to God’s unchanging faithfulness. If he were guided only by his feelings, despair would prevail. Instead, he finds renewed courage in the assurance that God never changes and that His Kingdom is coming. Suffering does not have the final word.
Do you recognize yourself in the psalm’s opening cry of lament? Then read the entire psalm carefully and let it lead you on the journey from sorrow to hope.
