Learning to see by God’s light

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:18-19 NIV)

The apostle Paul filled his letters with descriptions of God’s power and glory, the immeasurable riches of His grace, and the wonderful future He has prepared for those who believe. He never grows tired of speaking about these truths. Yet his deepest desire is that his readers would see them for themselves. That is why he prays that the eyes of their hearts may be enlightened. Only God Himself can make that happen.

By nature, we all live in darkness. We stumble through life without truly understanding where we are going or what is happening around us. But Jesus is the Light of the world. Whoever follows Him will no longer walk in darkness (see John 8:12). The closer we live to Him and the longer we follow Him, the more His light fills our lives. Our spiritual vision becomes clearer. We learn to look beyond the limits of this present world and keep our eyes fixed on the new creation God has promised.

A well-known hymn expresses this beautifully:

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

(“Amazing Grace,” John Newton)
