“… that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge…” (Ephesians 3:17-19)
Earlier in this series of reflections, I argued that we are created for relationships—not only with other people, but on an even deeper level, with God. Today’s Bible verse connects these two by showing that relationships with fellow believers are essential for knowing God more fully.
The apostle Paul says that we must be “rooted and grounded in love” in order to grasp the vastness of Christ’s love. And this happens “with all the saints”—that is, together with all of God’s children.
Christ’s love “surpasses knowledge”, which means we cannot fully comprehend it with our minds alone. This kind of knowledge does not come from a book, but from personal experience—much like getting to know a friend by spending time with them.
Every believer needs a personal and intimate relationship with God. Yet when our hearts overflow with His love, it is wonderful to share with other Christians what God is doing in our lives and, in turn, listen to their experiences. Together we celebrate His love and grow in faith. The global church, made up of countless believers from diverse cultures and generations, reflects the richness and depth of Christ’s love far more than any one person could on their own!
