“What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” (Mark 1:27)
Unclean spirits are servants of Satan. By definition, they are disobedient to God and try to oppose Him as much as possible. Yet the unclean spirits that Jesus encountered had no choice but to obey Him. When Jesus commanded them to leave, they had to go. When He forbade them to speak, they had to be silent.
This happened not just once, but many times. Wherever Jesus went, people brought the sick and the demon possessed to Him. He healed them and set them free.
Jesus’ actions make clear who is in charge. The unclean spirit had a man in its grip. But no dark power can stand up to Jesus. That is still true, even though Jesus is no longer physically on earth. He now sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named” (Ephesians 1:21). When we are confronted with satanic forces, we can call on Jesus for help. With Him, we are safe.
Do you experience spiritual warfare in your life? How does it manifest itself, and how do you defend yourself against it?
