“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee […] And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.’” (Mark 1:9-11)
The coming of God the Son to this earth is of the utmost importance. It is described in four books of the Bible, each writer approaching it from a different perspective. Matthew emphasizes that His coming fulfilled countless prophecies. Luke gives an extensive account of the events surrounding His birth. John begins with a poetic reflection on Jesus as God becoming human. Mark, however, starts immediately with His public ministry. In his account, there is great emphasis on the spiritual battle Jesus fought. It is this aspect that we will focus on more closely in this series of reflections.
The struggle between God and Satan, with the earth as its battleground, began when the first humans were tempted to sin. Through the centuries this conflict continued, but it reached its climax when Jesus came to earth to deal decisively with Satan and his demons.
When Jesus was thirty years old, He was baptized. On that occasion, God’s Spirit descended upon Him, and a voice from heaven revealed who He was: the Son of God. His identity was revealed to both people and to the spiritual powers. At that moment, Jesus’ public ministry began. He was ready to engage in the battle and to reclaim humanity for Himself.
