“And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking Him down, wrapped Him in the linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.” (Mark 15:46)
The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ died on the cross. He did not just fall unconscious (as some critics suggest). The Roman soldiers who confirmed His death were able to discern the difference between death and a temporary swoon. Jesus’ burial and the time He spent in the tomb made it undeniably clear to all that He had truly died. Both His followers and His enemies were convinced of this fact.
The Son of God, Redeemer of humanity, was buried in a tomb. This confirms the remark in John 13:1, “having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” Deeper love is not possible.
Jesus is the Author of life. He is “the Living One… alive forevermore”, who has the keys of death (see Revelation 1:18). But in order to defeat death and open the way to eternal life, He died Himself. A well known hymn by Charles Wesley (1707-1788), expresses this as follows:
“Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?”
The tomb in which Jesus was buried is the irrefutable proof of His death. At the same time, it sets the stage for the miracle of His resurrection just days later!
