Jesus Christ died for us

“I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3)

Jesus died for our sins, and He did so “in accordance with the Scriptures.” The apostle Paul considers this a matter “of first importance” for every Christian.

Jesus’ death was not merely a personal tragedy or a political execution. From a human perspective, Jesus was killed because He challenged the religious leaders’ carefully constructed power structures and religious authority. The Roman governor, wishing to satisfy the crowd, granted their demand that He be crucified. However, all this happened “in accordance with the Scriptures”. It was an essential part of God’s salvation plan that unfolded in history, as foretold by many prophets.

Jesus’ death was a sacrifice that paid the price for humanity’s sin once and for all. On the cross, He bore the wrath of God on our behalf. By doing so, He provided a way for us to be reconciled to God.

When Jesus’ followers witnessed His crucifixion, they did not yet comprehend these truths. It was only after He rose from the dead that they began to grasp the theological significance of everything that had occurred. Since that time, the cross has evolved into a powerful symbol of Christianity, emphasizing the centrality of the death of Christ.
