“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11 NIV)
Being compared to a sheep is hardly a compliment. Sheep can be stubborn and difficult, yet they are also defenseless against predators and completely dependent on their shepherd for daily care. These are not qualities to be proud of…
Yet the Bible repeatedly compares us to sheep—not to humiliate us, but to remind us of our need for the Shepherd who lovingly watches over us and provides for all our needs.
In Psalm 23, David joyfully declares that the Lord is his Shepherd, and therefore he always has enough. He finds security and contentment in God. Jesus takes this picture even further by calling Himself the Good Shepherd, who gives up His life for the wellbeing of the sheep. He fulfilled those words at the cross, dying in our place so that everyone who believes in Him may receive eternal life. It’s Jesus’ deepest desire to gather people from every nation and every generation into “one flock” under His gentle care and guidance (John 10:16).
Do you acknowledge your need for Jesus to protect and guide you? How do you experience His loving care?
