Jesus calmed the storm

And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea… Then He rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” (Matthew 8:24-26)

The disciples had witnessed how Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons and fed 5,000 people. But they still did not fully grasp who Jesus was. Then one night, they were crossing the lake of Galilee and a great storm arose. The boat was covered by the waves and the disciples feared for their lives! But once more, Jesus used a threatening situation to show His power. He rebuked the storm, and the wind stopped. The sea became completely calm. Who would winds and waves obey, but their Creator? Only God can calm the roughest seas (Psalm 65:7). Therefore, the disciples were amazed and filled with great fear, since they began to realize that God was with them in their boat!

Knowing that God is with you should indeed fill you with awe. But it is also very comforting to know that Jesus is not just “a great teacher”, but that He is God the Son and that He has the whole world in His hands. If you live with Him, you are safe from the storms of life.

No fear shall overwhelm me,
For Lord, I do believe
You’re the Master and the Maker,
You’re the man who calms the sea.
(Song by Stuart Townend and Gary Sadler)
