How many times do we live? Are our lives like a video game where you die and then get to go back to start and try again?
Some religions maintain that we don’t only live once, but many times. This belief is called re-incarnation. In these religions, it is taught that a person’s karma (life essence embedded with a record of their good and bad deeds) gets reborn as another being once you die. If you did really well in this life, then you move up and get a better reincarnation, maybe as someone richer. But if you were bad in this life, then you will get a lower reincarnation, born as a poorer, less intelligent, or less privileged person, or maybe even an animal. Some people today even claim to have recovered memories of past lives that they have lived.
From the Bible’s point of view, re-incarnation is impossible.
Created by God
Each person is created by God and “it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). It is not re-birth but judgment that comes after death.
However, those who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ do not need to fear God’s judgment that comes after death. When Jesus was dying on the cross, one of the criminals being executed next to Jesus asked Jesus to remember him after he had died. Jesus did not reply, “Don’t worry. You’ll be reborn and have a second chance to live a good life.” What did Jesus say? Jesus replied, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). After Jesus and the criminal died, they would both be in paradise (heaven) together.
YOLO (you only live once)
It can be really tempting to believe in re-incarnation. After all, it means we don’t have to try really hard to be good in this life or to really seek to know the truth about God. They’ll be another chance in the next life, right? Wrong. Re-incarnation is impossible.
God sent the Lord Jesus Christ into this world to rescue us from sin, death, and the Devil. This life is our only chance. Make the most of this life. “Seek God while He may be found, call upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6) because some day it will be too late.
