The question is clear. The only thing we need to clarify is the meaning of true love. Who is capable of true love? Only God! John 3:16 tells us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
True love is sacrificial love – love that is willing to give what is most precious for the sake of others. Other qualities of true love are found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it his not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Responding to God’s love
God’s love for people is true love, but for the most part it is one-sided love. A lot of people don’t care about God or have any desire to know Him. Others blame Him for every bad thing that happens in their lives or live their lives as they please with the belief that God does not exist. But, some of us have responded in love to God who has first loved us. God’s love is true love. It is one-sided love to start with.
We should not force love
God does not force anyone to love Him back. We shouldn’t either. Therefore, if, for example, a relationship has been broken and you’re trying to restore it, you should love the other person unconditionally even if they don’t respond back in love (Romans 12:18). Another example might be in seeking a spouse: if you have already made your intentions clear and the response is still negative it is best to back off and let the person go. That’s what you should do if you truly love the person. Go ahead and live your life the way God wants you to and don’t try to force someone who does not love you back!
