Is it true that we are sinners? How can we avoid doing the same sin continually?
Yes the Bible states very clearly in many ways that everyone is a sinner. Romans 3:23 says “we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God“. Is one of the best known verses to highlight this, but there are many more.
How can we avoid committing the same sin over and over again?
The Bible gives guidelines for this, and this is the main difference between being a Christian and being religious. When we become Christians we need to come to point where we realise that we have sinned/disobeyed/rebelled against God. The Bible tells us that anyone who sins will die. We need to accept that because of this we will be punished by death (Romans 6:23). If we accept that Jesus Christ has taken the punishment for us already when He died on the cross then we will be released from that punishment. But from now on we must live for Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. “I am crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).
“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God. Do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires… offer yourselves to God” (Romans 6:11 – 13).
Being His servants
When we become Christians we offer ourselves to Christ to be His servants, to obey Him. You can’t go on committing the same sins over and over again if you are a Christian who has let God become his master.
“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey, whether you are slaves to sin,, which leads to death or to obedience which leads to righteousness” (Romans 6 : 16 – 18).
As we mature as Christians we realise that we need to get to know Him more so that we know what he requires of us, reading God’s word, praying, spending time with His people, fellow Christians, will help us to grow.
Being a Christian is about knowing God more and more, giving ourselves to him as a living sacrifice and allowing God to renew our minds (Romans 12:1 – 2). It is about becoming like Jesus Christ more and more (Romans 8:29).
It doesn’t matter what kind of sin people have been involved with before they became Christians – drugs, alcohol, sex, theft, violence, lying …… If we are to stop doing any of these things we need God’s help. His Holy Spirit is with all of His people and will warn us in our hearts when we sin against God. If we confess and ask for His forgiveness He can help us to have victory over these things. If we ignore His warning in our hearts and continue to sin we will find that we can never stop doing these things.
