This question shows, that you have a desire to discover God’s will for your life and that is great. It is not always easy to understand what God wants you to do. Still, there are a number of things, that have helped me to discover God’s will for my life.
Walk with God
The first Bible text that hit me, was Genesis 5:24: “And Enoch walked with God.” I discovered that I can at any time and any place walk with God and talk to God and listen to what He has to say to me.
Read His Word
God talks through His Word. It is His love letter. In the Bible God tells a lot about His purpose for our lives. It is filled with good advises. When I read the Bible, I read it out loud. In this way I hear what God has to say to me! Every day I choose one verse that I can take with me that day. Proverbs 3:6 says: “He shall direct your paths.” Living with God is like a discovery trip. Psalm 119: 105 says: “Your word is a lamp for my feet.” It’s not a spotlight. Step by step you will discover more of God’s will.
Ask for advise
Proverbs 11:14 says: “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” God speaks through His servants. Look for trustworthy Christians in your church or in your area, that are willing to mentor and advise you.
Follow the desire God puts in your heart
God speaks with a still voice in your heart. He plants a desire in your heart like a pearl. You have to discover it and go for it! Psalm 37:4: “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Discover your gifts
1 Peter 4: 10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” God loves you and gives you specific gifts and talents to use. Therefore: follow the voice of your heart and use the gifts you have received from Him!
I used to pray and then say Amen. I rushed to my daily work. Sometimes God has been calling: Hey, friend, do you want an answer? But I didn’t hear it. I had to learn that praying also means listening. I felt like Samuel, who had to learn to recognize Gods voice. Eli told him (1 Samuel 3: 9): “If He calls you, say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” Honestly said: I used to pray Listen Lord, for your servant is speaking. John 10: 27 says: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” If you want to discover God’s will for your life: listen carefully!
Receive a confirmation
When you have important decisions to make, sometimes God confirms His will with a sign. Gideon even asked for such a sign in Judges 6: 17: “If now I have found favour in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.”
I mentioned seven steps to discover God’s will. There are more. Important is, that these steps are in line with each other. For example: you have a desire in your heart. The Bible confirms that desire. People around you encourage you. You receive a confirmation from God. You have peace in your heart about it. Well, I would say: go for it. And do it relaxed, knowing that God loves you and will be with you every day of your life.
