God wants to be your Husband

Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7)

This seems like an absurd statement. Of course, the eternal, holy God cannot marry a human being. That’s right. Yet God uses this metaphor very often to describe His relationship with His people Israel and the worldwide church. God describes Himself as a faithful, loving Husband who is deceived time and again by His beloved when she serves other gods and turns away from Him. This grieves Him immensely: “Surely, as a treacherous wife leaves her husband, so have you been treacherous to me, O house of Israel, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 3:20).

But in His infinite love, He gives them the opportunity to come back to Him. In 2 Corinthians 11:2, Paul compares his readers to “a pure virgin” who will be given in marriage to Christ. The book of Revelation describes in a vision the wedding supper of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, with His bride. These are all images for the exclusive, intimate relationship Jesus wants to establish with each person who believes in Him. He loves His bride so much that He gave His life for her to sanctify and cleanse her from her sin (see Ephesians 5:25-27).

That is ultimate love! Do you accept Jesus’ “proposal”?
