“He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” (Acts 17:25)
God’s creative work was most clearly visible when He brought the world and all living things into existence out of nothing. But even after that first week, God remained the Creator. All life depends on Him.
Greek poets had already come to the conclusion: “In him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28) The apostle Paul completely agrees with them. God gives both humans and animals the breath of life and everything they need to survive.
Psalm 104:27-29 (ESV) says the same with poetry: “These all look to You, to give them their food in due season. […] When You hide Your face, they are dismayed; when You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.”
The poet of this psalm rejoices at the thought that God sustains all life. He praises Him and wants to sing to Him every day. “O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom have You made them all.” (Psalm 104:24)
Do you ever pause and consider that you depend on God for every breath you take; that every bite of food is a gift from Him? And when you pause to consider this, what emotions does your dependence on your Creator arouse in you?
