“By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,’
declares the Lord.
‘I will defend this city and save it, for My sake and for the sake of David My servant!’” (Isaiah 37:34-35 NIV)
Hezekiah was not disappointed. God truly intervened! He sent an angel who killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers during the night. After that, the rest of the army fled back to their own land, where King Sennacherib was killed by his own sons. Despite all their proud words, the Assyrians proved no match for the God of Israel. Jerusalem was safe because God protected the city.
No one could have predicted this outcome. Something like this had never happened before! But as many believers have experienced, nothing is impossible for God.
- He placed a dark cloud between His people and their opponents so they could not attack (Exodus 14:19–20).
- He made a dry path through a rushing river so His people could cross safely (Joshua 3:14–16).
- He caused the walls of a fortified city to collapse (Joshua 6:20).
- He destroyed Israel’s enemies with a hailstorm (Joshua 10:11).
- He blinded a group of soldiers that wanted to capture the prophet Elisha, so that they did not recognize him (2 Kings 6:19–20).
- He caused an entire army to flee by making them hear the sound of a non-existent army (2 Kings 7:6–7).
