God reveals Himself

“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.”” (Exodus 3:14)

When God appeared to Moses and commissioned him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, He also revealed his name: “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you’”. At first sight, this seems a strange name. But it reveals something crucial about God, it describes his identity.

First, God IS, He exists independent from anything else. He is absolutely autonomous. Second, He doesn’t change like we humans do, but is constant in his being and character. And third, God is eternal. He has always existed and will exist forever. Moreover, the phrase “I AM” or “I will be” refers back to God’s promise two verses earlier: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12).

That’s very special. This eternal, independent, and unchanging God promises to be with his people. He is completely different from us humans, and yet He comes very close. Having such a God makes the impossible possible — like leading a whole people out of slavery.

Do you know God as the “I AM” who is eternal, independent, and nevertheless “with you”?
