‘Thus says the LORD, “By this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and it shall turn into blood.’ (Exodus 7:17 )
The Egyptians are not impressed by Moses’ message, they don’t believe in the God of Israel. Then God will show them what He is like through supernatural signs, that are at the same time judgments on their disobedience.
The first sign concerns the river Nile, which was immensely important for the Egyptians. It was their main water supply in a country mainly covered by desert, it fertilized their fields, it provided fish, and it had an important place in their religion. But God shows that He reigns over all the earth, including rivers.
When Aaron stretches out his staff over the waters of Egypt, they turn to blood. Pharaoh’s magicians can copy this miracle, but they can’t undo it.
As Pharaoh remains hardened, many other signs follow. He sees how God brings about plagues, and how He alone can end them, “so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God” (Exodus 8:10). Even the magicians recognize: “This is the finger of God”! (Exodus 8:19).
These stories show clearly that God is almighty. He reigns!
