“God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”
God has revealed himself as “I am who I am”. But He adds something to that: I am the God of your fathers. He knows them by name, even though they have passed away centuries ago. God keeps the promises that He had given to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob about the land their descendants would inherit. Now is the time to fulfill these promises.
For Israel it is assuring that this God that commands them to leave Egypt, is the same God their ancestors knew personally, and the same God who gave them amazing promises of His care and blessing.
This name of God is to be remembered throughout all generations. Therefore Peter can tell the Jews some 1500 years later: “You are the sons (…) of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.” (Acts 3:25-26).
