“And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.” (Acts 2:43)
When the Lord Jesus gave His disciples the command to proclaim the gospel everywhere, He promised to always be with them, even to the end of the age. In the book of Acts, His presence becomes visible. The Holy Spirit gave the disciples the courage to speak openly about Jesus. He also gave them the right words to say—even in different languages. And their preaching was confirmed by many signs and wonders. For example, numerous sick people were healed and demons were driven out. Naturally, this attracted the attention of the public. It also revealed something of God’s new world, where there will no longer be any pain or sickness. And it was clear evidence that the Lord Jesus, though He had returned to heaven, still possesses authority on earth. He is stronger than the powers of evil.
God has not changed since the period described in the book of Acts. He is just as powerful today. He also continues to work by His Spirit in the hearts of believers. How do you notice His presence in your own life and in the worldwide church?
At the same time, this first period was unique. The Holy Spirit does not always work in such visible ways everywhere and at all times. Why do you think that is?
