“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)
There is so much around us that we can see and hear. Our senses take in all that information. At the same time, countless things are happening that our eyes and ears cannot perceive. And it is precisely this unseen reality that is of great importance.
God is invisible. We can see His work in the world, but we do not see Him directly. God’s adversary, Satan, is also invisible, and he makes clever use of that. He seeks to entangle people in sin without them realizing the spiritual battle taking place behind the scenes.
Because our senses do not reveal the whole of reality, we need more than our eyes and ears. We need faith: a firm and deep conviction about what we do not see.
By faith we understand that God created the world (Hebrews 11:3). By faith we also know that one day He will redeem and renew this world. That hope enables us to persevere as we eagerly await God’s future (Romans 8:18–25).
In the Bible, there are moments when God allows something of this unseen reality to become visible. Over the coming days, we will reflect on several of these accounts so that our spiritual vision may be sharpened once again.
