“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The disciples had the great calling to spread the Gospel to all the nations. But before they could do so, they would receive the Holy Spirit. This Spirit of God would give them power to preach the Gospel, He would make people receptive for this good news and transform their hearts, and He would support the preaching by supernatural signs and miracles.
Before Jesus’ mission on earth, this work of the Holy Spirit had not been present on such a large scale. As Jesus told his disciples in John 16:7-13, “I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment […] he will guide you into all the truth […] and he will declare to you the things that are to come”.
And this is what the Holy Spirit still does. Although supernatural signs seem mostly limited to special occasions, the inward work of the Spirit convicting people of their sins and of the possibility of receiving Jesus’ righteousness as their own, is seen all over the world. Millions of people have been saved already. And many believers can testify about the transforming power and guidance of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Does this Spirit of God dwell in your heart?
