There is one question that keeps coming back to me: Does God exist? In school they teach me that it all began with a big bang. How can I be sure that God exists?
Thank you for your good question. It can be pretty confusing when you hear the different opinions about the beginning of our universe. I once heard a man say: ‘You have to choose: either it is: “In the beginning there was nothing and that exploded” or it is: “In the beginning God created heaven and earth”‘ (Genesis 1:1). What sounds more logical to you? Science asks ‘What happened?’ There is another important question: ‘Who did it?’ The Bible tells us: God did it. He created the heavens and the earth. God is the Creator of the earth, and life, and your life.
Existence of God
We cannot prove the existence of God in a scientific way. Neither can be proven in a scientific way that God does not exist. Philosophers have thought a lot about this. Descartes (1596-1650), a French philosopher, said: ‘Something that is thought of by every human being must exist. Everybody thinks God. Therefore God exists’. But you will drown in all the different ideas and philosophies. Is there a better way to find out?
The Bible tells us about prophets, who saw God in a vision. Isaiah tells us: “I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple” (Isaiah 6:1). And John writes in the book of Revelation 4:2: “Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.”
It is clear that they only can stutter or sing about the glory of God Almighty. He is so great, we cannot imagine how great His glory is. Who am I to see God in His glory, when He is the Creator of our cosmos?
God comes to us
The wonderful story of the Bible is, that because I cannot come to God, God decided to come to me. You could say: He bowed down to my level of understanding. God became a man of flesh and blood. His name is Jesus. The Bible tells us, Jesus is an icon of God, the Father. In Hebrews 1:3 we read: “Jesus, who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.”
When I look to Jesus I see God, the Father. I see His loving character, His will to save people.
Jesus was a person in history. We know a lot about Him through the Bible. He said: “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
God is there for you as well
Now you could say: but that is more than 2000 years ago. How does it help me today? Today Jesus is alive and well and He sends His Holy Spirit to dwell in the hearts of His children. Millions of people experience His power, His love, His comfort. Through the ages, people have testified of God’s help in their lives. Today God is there for you as well. You can talk to Him. Ask Him for help and guidance. The way to contact Him is through prayer.
Before I became a Christian, I have thought a lot about the existence of God. God became real to me at the moment I bowed down and put my faith in Jesus. Why should you not do the same? Please let us know when we can help you further in your search.
