What is the core of the Bible?

The whole Bible is God’s Word. This is the conviction that the Holy Spirit gives us when we read the Bible. But the Bible has a core of very important things, while other passages are not directly relevant to us today. So what is the core?

What Bible says about God Himself

First, the core of the Bible is what God says about Himself. When you seek Him and get to know Him through the Bible, you also get to know his will. Compare it to two schoolboys who didn’t know what their homework was for the next day. The one boy called all of his friends to find out and spent a long time doing that, but got no clear answer. In the end he didn’t have much time left and he did as little as he thought he could get away with, to be sure he didn’t do any work he wasn’t assigned to do. The other boy just went to work and worked all afternoon and evening to be sure he would at least have done what he had to do. We should be like the second boy. We should not try to find out what the minimum is that God will allow us to do. We should try to please Him as much as we can.

What the Bible says about the Son of God

Secondly, the core of the Bible is what the Bible says about the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Even the Old Testament speaks to us about Jesus (Luke 24:27). Paul says that ‘Christ and Him crucified’ is the core of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 2:2). Christ was crucified, so that if we believe in Him we will not perish but have eternal life.

What the Bible says about the Holy Spirit

Thirdly, the core of the Bible is what the Bible says about the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. He leads the children of God in the truth (Romans 8:14). The Holy Spirit teaches believers God’s will (1 Thessalonians 4:9), and He also gives them the desire and the power to do His will.

In summary: when you sincerely want to know God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit- search the Bible with the intention to know and obey Him, and the Holy Spirit will guide you in the truth.
