By the Holy Spirit, we can overcome spiritual enemies

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Being a Christian means being at war — against your own sinful desires, against false teachings, against spiritual powers that try to pull you away from God. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

This can be overwhelming. But we need not be afraid. He who is in us — the Holy Spirit — is greater than anything or anybody who is in the world. As Jesus said in John 16:33: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” We can be sure that “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” and that “neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).

This was visible in the miracles that the apostles did, for example when they cast out a bad spirit from a slave girl. Wherever the Holy Spirit is present, Satan and his servants have to go. Therefore: be on your guard, but do not be afraid!
