“You shall not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14)
When God had created the first man, He said: “I see that it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make the companion he needs, one just right for him.” (Genesis 2:18, ERV) This companion was the first woman, Eve. God gave her to Adam, and He made marriage an institution for humans: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).
So, marriage is not just a social construction invented by man, but God’s own idea. The rest of the Bible explains that marriage should be a lifelong covenant relationship between one man and one woman.
The seventh commandment forbids adultery, that is, to have a sexual relationship outside of marriage. God wants us to be faithful to our spouse. He wants us to stay away from sexual sins. We should use our body in a way that is holy and that gives honor to God.
