“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (NIV)
Paul speaks of “a treasure in jars of clay” that believers have been entrusted with (see also 1 Corinthians 4:1). This treasure consists of the knowledge of God’s glory that has become visible in Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, believers get to know and experience Him.
When someone discovers a precious treasure, they usually want to keep it to themselves; they prefer not to share their wealth with others. However, it is different with this treasure. When you come to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you naturally want to share that joy with others. That is what Paul is referring to in the verses quoted above. He was called to be a servant of Jesus Christ, to spread the good news everywhere. But he did not do this in his own strength—he was merely a fragile clay jar. He was not an impressive personality. He struggled with suffering and worries in his missionary work. But it was precisely in his personal weakness that God’s power became clearly visible. Countless people came to faith through Paul’s ministry. Many believers were encouraged and built up in their faith through his teachings and example. Because Paul freely shared his treasure, the light of God could shine all the brighter.
