“’Follow me,’ He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him.” (Matthew 9:9 NIV)
Jesus told Matthew to follow Him. The story continues: “Matthew got up and followed Him.” He does not argue, consult his family, or first weigh the pros and cons of such a life-changing decision. No, he simply obeys Jesus. He leaves his tax collector’s booth behind, thereby giving up his career and financial stability. Without further hesitation, he follows Jesus into an uncertain future. That is a miracle. From this moment on, Matthew’s life is no longer centered on himself, but on Jesus.
That is what conversion is about: a new beginning, a resurrection into a new life. You recognize a call from above and respond to it because, in a sense, you have to. The word of the Lord is so powerful that it sets people in motion. When He calls them, they leave their old life behind and begin something new—they follow Him. Paul expresses it this way: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20 NIV).
Do not wait until all your questions and doubts have been resolved. You may bring them to God, but do so while following Jesus. Respond to His call to follow Him—day after day.
