“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46 NIV)
At first glance, the parable Jesus tells here seems very similar to the parable in Matthew 13:44. Someone finds something precious and is willing to give up everything to get hold of that treasure.
But if you pay close attention, this parable is a mirror image of the previous one. Jesus does not compare the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure here, but to a merchant or trader. That merchant is Jesus Himself. The pearl He wants to acquire at any price is the worldwide church consisting of believers from all times and places.
God the Father loved this world so much that He gave up His only Son to save it (see John 3:16).
God the Son loved this world so much that He left His glory behind, became human, and was willing to die for sinful people (see 2 Corinthians 8:9 and 1 Peter 1:18-19).
And why? Are we really that valuable? No, we are not. Our sin has damaged and defiled us. We have lost our value like a broken pearl. And yet… God still loves us. We are precious to Him. He is willing to pay the highest price for us.
Do you feel precious? Can you imagine why God the Father and Jesus were willing to sacrifice so much in order to have a pure, loving relationship with humans?
