Before coming to know Jesus Christ, people are spiritually separated from God and guided by their sinful desires. If we are born again, we receive new spiritual life. Baptism is a visible testimony of this: it symbolizes the burial of our old life and the beginning of a new life devoted to God. The daily challenge is to walk in this new life, relying on the strength that the Holy Spirit gives us.
The tendencies of our old nature remain and continually seek to regain influence over our thoughts and choices. Experiencing wrong desires or sinful thoughts is part of the human condition and is not, in itself, sin. Sin arises when we give in to them and allow them to govern our actions. Therefore, it is important to resist these impulses and bring them under the authority of Christ. Those who have been made new by the Holy Spirit are called to align their lives with His guidance, so that the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in their daily lives.
