“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42 ESV)
In the book of Acts, we read how the Christian church took shape after Jesus Christ had returned to heaven and the Holy Spirit had been poured out. This marked the beginning of a new phase in the history of the church, one that continues until Jesus returns. We too live in this same period between His first and second coming. In that sense, our situation is comparable to that of the first church in Jerusalem.
Acts 2 does not describe a perfect church. It soon becomes clear that these were ordinary people with faults and shortcomings. Yet it also reveals what the Holy Spirit desires to do in a congregation that acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
The first thing that stands out is the devotion of the believers. Following Christ in this world requires commitment. We face opposition from our own sinful hearts, from the world around us, and from the spiritual forces of evil. Therefore, steadfast devotion is necessary. It takes effort to continue believing and living with God.
To remain faithful, the early church focused on four things that are still crucial today: the apostles’ teaching, fellowship with one another, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Over the coming days, we will reflect on these four “pillars.”
