“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
Genesis 1 records how God created everything “very good”. However, it did not take long before evil entered creation
through an attack of the domain of spiritual darkness. God’s enemy Satan convinced the first humans to disobey their Creator. This disobedience is called “the fall of man”, and it caused pain and death that lasted till this very day.
Since this first attack of Satan, he constantly tries to destroy God’s good creation and God’s salvation plan. The earth has become a battle ground. If we look around us or read the newspapers, Satan seems to be pretty successful! The
earth is filled with unrighteousness, sorrow, and sin.
And yet, the Bible says: “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. Yes, Satan is powerful. But no, he won’t win the battle! In fact, he has already been defeated. He knows that “his time is short” (Revelation 12:12), then God will destroy him. The light can never be overcome by the darkness, because it originates in the eternal, almighty God.
In what ways do you notice that this world is a battle ground?
