“None of them repent of their wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Each pursues their own course like a horse charging into battle.” (Jeremiah 8:6 NIV)
The prophet Jeremiah is sent by God with a solemn message. Israel is about to face severe judgment: an enemy army will devastate the land, deport most of its people, and leave those who remain in deep misery. The situation will become so desperate that people will prefer death to life (see Jeremiah 8:3).
The reason for this disaster lies with the people themselves. For generations they have been unfaithful to God. They worship idols—even in the Lord’s temple—and ignore His commands about justice and love for their neighbor. Time and again, God sends prophets with the same appeal: Stop living this way! Turn back and choose the right path! But the people refuse to listen. They are like horses charging headlong into battle, paying no attention to the danger ahead. They are rushing toward their own destruction.
What a powerful warning! God desires what is best for us. He even gave His own Son to rescue humanity from destruction. But if we refuse to listen and keep running away from the Lord, the outcome will be tragic.
