“So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.” (John 21:11)
For a moment, Peter had eyes only for Jesus, but now his attention is drawn to the fish that have been caught. The net is pulled ashore, and every fish is carefully counted: 153 fish. Not “more than a hundred” or “about one hundred and fifty,” but exactly 153. That precision is significant. Each fish is a gift from God and evidence of His powerful provision. Therefore, every fish counts.
For these fishermen, God’s blessing was visible in an overflowing net. What blessings has God given you? In what ways do you see His care, guidance, and power in your life? Try listing them and reflecting on them intentionally. You may even discover that you can count more than 153 blessings!
Consciously counting the “fish” that have been given to us helps us honor God and reminds us of His power and goodness.
Do you struggle to put your gratitude into words? Then read Psalm 103. This psalm already provides many reasons for thanksgiving. Add to them the blessings you see in your own life, in your church, and in the work of missions and evangelism. In this way, your prayer of thanksgiving will become richer, and you will receive fresh encouragement to continue as a follower of Jesus and a “fisher of men.”
