When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea.” (John 21:7)
Imagine a child happily playing. Suddenly the child looks up. A flash of recognition. Dad is home! Instantly the toys are forgotten. The child jumps up, runs to the door, and throws itself into its father’s arms.
The same thing happens to Peter, who is busy bringing the full fishing nets to shore. As soon as he is told that the Lord Jesus is standing on the shore of the lake, he leaves the nets behind and jumps out of the boat to get to Jesus as quickly as possible. At that moment, nothing is more important!
Perhaps it is a good thing that not everyone reacts as impulsively as Peter. His companions safely bring the boat to shore and haul in the catch. But then they too come to Jesus. They all share the same desire: to be with Him, to hear His words, and to spend time in His presence.
A follower of Jesus is first and foremost His child. Yes, we may serve His Kingdom and point others to Him. But our highest calling is not to work for Him, but to be with Him. That is what truly matters. Everything else comes after that.
